What is liver cancer?

Liver cancer begins in the cells of liver. There are many types of liver cancer but the most common hepatocellular carcinoma, which begins in the main type of liver cell (hepatocyte). Some other types of liver cancer are intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hepatoblastoma, are less common. It is are more common in men than in women.

What are causes of liver cancer?

Primary liver cancers can happen due to chronic liver damage over a long period time (15-30years) caused by multiple factors like chronic alcohol abuse, chronic hepatitis (Hepatitis B or C), hemochromatosis and cirrhosis due to any other cause like obesity and fatty liver disease. Alcoholic liver disease and Hepatitis B/C constitute the majority (>70%) of liver cancer.

Factors that increase the risk of primary liver cancer include:

  • Chronic infection with HBV or HCV:Chronic infection like hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) increases your risk of liver cancer.
  • Cirrhosis:70 percent of liver cirrhosis patients develop liver cancer. In cirrhosis, normal cells are either damaged, die or replaced by scar tissue. If normal cells are significantly damaged, they can become cancer cells.
  • Certain inherited liver diseases:Inherited liver diseases like hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease increase the risk of liver cancer.
  • Diabetes:People with diabetes are at greater risk of liver cancer than those who don’t have diabetes.
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease:People having fatty liver diseases are at greater risk of liver cancer.
  • Exposure to aflatoxins:Exposure to aflatoxins poisons produced by moulds that grow on crops that are stored poorly can put you in risk of liver cancer. It is usually produced on grains and nuts, which can end up in foods made of these products.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the most prominent risk factor of liver cancer as it can lead to irreversible liver damage and increase your risk of liver cancer.

What are symptoms of liver cancer?

Liver cancer doesn’t cause any symptoms in early stage. But  when signs and symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Losing weight without trying
  • Loss of appetite
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • General weakness and fatigue
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Yellow discoloration of your skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
  • White, chalky stools

What are treatment options for liver cancer?

Liver cancer treatment depends on a number of factors, like type of cancer, the grade of the cancer and stage of cancer. All factors are taken into consideration along with overall health of patient and treatment preferences.

Surgery

It is primary treatment for many liver cancers when detecting early and curable.

  1. Surgery to remove the tumor: In this, tumour is removed along with some healthy surrounding tissue.
  2. Liver transplant surgery: In this, diseased liver is removed and replaced by healthy liver of donor. This option is for the liver cancer patients with early-stage liver cancer but not enough functioning of the rest of the liver.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy in oral form is used for prolonging the life, when the disease has spread to multiple organs or liver function is poor and cannot sustain surgery or any of the above treatment then.
